Basal Cell Carcinoma of Skin

Basal Cell Carcinoma of skin is the most common form of skin cancer. It is also the most common cancer in the western world. Basal Cell Carcinoma almost always grows locally in the skin. Treatment of this cancer is also directed to local control of the disease.

Majority of Basal Cell Carcinomas of skin are found in head and neck area. This is due to the fact that the development of this cancer is promoted by chronic and intense exposure to sun. There are three types of Basal Cell Carcinoma

  1. Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma - This type is very superficial and can be treated with topical treatments.
  2. Infiltrative Basal Cell Carcinoma - This type of skin cancer penetrates deeper in the skin and is often treated with surgery.
  3. Nodular Basal Cell Carcinoma - This type of skin cancer presents with a nodule or a lump on the skin.

Basal Cell Carcinoma usually appears as a non healing skin wound, most commonly on the scalp or face. A biopsy is required to establish the correct diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is established, one can plan for proper treatment.

Treatment of Basal Cell Carcinoma is aimed at eradicating the disease with minimal damage to the surrounding normal skin. This can be achieved by Surgery or Topical / Local Anti Cancer Treatments. Not all skin cancers need to be removed surgically. Excellent treatment results can be achieved with non surgical methods, such as cryotherapy, as well as topical medications.
